Children and Green Technology
With the current push for green technology, many parents are looking for ways to get their children involved in a positive way and teach ecological behaviors that will last a lifetime. To meet this end, several informational materials have been published that address the best way of teaching children about the benefits that are present with green technology. Because children have a different way of processing information, it is important to teach important concepts like sustainable development in a way that they are able to retain the information and have a motivation to put the ideas into practice. One of the biggest mistakes that parents make in teaching children about things like renewable energy is to address it from a negative standpoint. Saying that the world will soon run out of oil and that is the reason why solar panels should be used will not have the same resonance among children as it will with adults. A better choice in this particular example is to explain how the sun provides energy through the solar panels and how that process is what powers simple devices like the television and oven. In learning how to go green, children will best respond when acting in an ecologically friendly manner will have a direct result.
A great way to get children to start thinking about green technology is to involve them in recycling programs. A parent can have the child be responsible for separating all of the materials that can be recycled. When they are taken to the nearest local recycling center, the child should be the one to turn them and receive any money if applicable. With this method, the child will associate recycling as a positive action because of the money that they receive. These kind of techniques will give a positive spin to green technology rather than focusing on the negative aspects of non-green activities.
